Commercial marine fishery 2017 (provisional)

Published 30.1.2018
  • In 2017, the marine catch by fishing vessels registered in Finland totalled 154 million kg.
  • The bulk of catch consisted Baltic herring (134 million kg), followed by sprat (16 million kg).
  • The total catches of herring and sprat remained at the same level as last year, but increased in the southern Baltic and in the Gulf of Finland and decreased in the Bothnian sea.
  • The majority of the fishermen fished perch, whitefish, pikeperch, salmon and pike with gill nets or trap nets in the coastal areas. Bad weather and the damage caused by seals made fishing difficult and the catch of the coastal fishery remained exceptionally small.
