Description

The Balance Sheet for Food Commodities is a total calculation for Finland compiled in the form of a balance sheet. It shows the domestic production and use, changes in stocks, and exports and imports of the country's most important food commodity groupings. Domestic use is subdivided into animal feed, seed use, industrial raw materials and use as food. Figures for annual per capita consumption are calculated on the basis of food products purchased for use as food.

Content

The statistics contain 11 food product groups (cereals, potatoes, sugar, legumes, vegetables, fruits and berries, meat, eggs, fish, milk products, oils and fats) as well as beverages. These groups are then subdivided into individual products, of which there were 64 in 2013. The balance sheet presents figures for the whole country in millions of kilos. Figures for average per capita food consumption in Finland are given in kilograms per year and grams per day, and also include the caloric value and the protein, fat and carbohydrate contents of foods.

Data collection and sources

Data is collected from a variety of sources, the major ones being Natural Resources Institute Finland’s production and harvest statistics, farm surveys and fisheries and hunting statistics. Other main sources include the foreign trade statistics of Finnish Customs.

Update frequency

The statistics are drawn up once a year.

Preparation and publication schedule

The statistics are published in June.

Information is available from the harvest year 1949/1950 onwards.
