Description

The forest biodiversity section presents information on the numbers of threatened species, the preservation of valuable habitats’ special features and the tree stock, the quantity and quality of retention trees and the quality of water protection.

Content

The latest assessment of threatened species in Finland was published in 2010. Other forest biodiversity information is updated annually.

Categories

Threatened species are categorised as follows: vertebrates, invertebrates, vascular plants, cryptogams, fungi and lichens. The preservation of the special features of valuable habitats, the quality of retention trees and water protection are estimated as a percentage of the areas. Retention trees are further classified into living and dead trees.

Data collection and sources

The information about threatened species is provided by the Ministry of the Environment. Information describing the quality of nature management in non-industrial privately owned forests is obtained from the Finnish Forest Centre.

Update frequency

The statistics describing the quality of nature management are updated once a year. The list of threatened species will be updated when the next assessment is completed (2019). The assessment of threatened species is performed at ten-year intervals.

Preparation and publication schedule

The information is compiled on the Natural Resources Institute Finland’s website as soon as it is released by the original producer of the data.

Time series

The first official assessment of threatened species was conducted in 1985. The list of threatened species was updated in 1991, 2000 and 2010. Natural Resources Institute Finland’s statistical database contains assessments of the numbers of threatened species for the years 2000 and 2010. The Finnish Forest Centre has monitored the quality of nature management since 1996.
