  • Nearly 14,000 farms were engaged in other business activities in addition to agriculture and horticulture in 2016.
  • The number of farms engaged in other business activities has decreased by roughly 2,900 farms since 2013.
  • Farms engaged in other business activities accounted for 28 per cent of all farms, while the corresponding figure in 2013 was 30 per cent.
  • Contracting was the most common form of other business activities, with roughly 7,000 farms engaged in contracting.
  • Agricultural machine contracting was the most common form of contracting.
  • Other business activities employed approximately 22,000 people.
  • Agricultural and horticultural enterprises spent roughly 8,800 person years on other business activities.
