Profitability of fishery (Aquaculture 2014)

  • In 2014, the number of main activity aquaculture enterprises amounted to 170 and the number of full time equivalent employees to 329. Approximately one half of the enterprises produced fry. The producers who produced both food fish and fry provided the most employment, 155 full time equivalent in total.
  • In 2014, the aquaculture profits amounted to 62 million euros. If imputed pay adjustments are included in the costs, aquaculture posted a net loss in 2014. In proportional terms, the total costs decreased more than the total income, which improved the profitability of the industry.
  • Producers who had combined production of fry with food fish accounted for the highest profits. However, the production of food fish in the sea is most profitable and the net profits slightly exceed one million euros. Other production methods were making losses.
  • The total cost of aquaculture amounted to 58 million euros in 2014. Feed costs were the most significant cost item, accounting for almost half of the total cost. The proportion of wages of the costs was around one fifth. 
  • The added value of aquaculture sector amounted to 16.6 million euros in 2014. The debt decreased to 64 million euros, with the balance sheet total being 96 million euros.
