Stumpage earnings 2017

Published 21.6.2018
  • Gross stumpage earnings increased to EUR 2.23 billion in 2017, higher than before since the peak year 2017.
  • The earnings of private non-industrial forest owners totalled EUR 1.91 billion. Of this amount, 83% came from standing sales, 11% from delivery sales and the remaining 6% comprised the value of wood sourced for private use. Stumpage earnings of the forest industry and the state totalled EUR 0.32 billion.
  • In euro terms, the earnings grew by EUR 150 million from the year before. This increase was particularly attributable to the increase in the harvesting of pine logs (+8.5%) and the euro-denominated increase in stump prices. Private non-industrial forests accounted for four-fifths of the increase in earnings.
  • In real terms, the earnings increased by 2%, as the change in value was converted using the wholesale price index. The increase in the earnings mainly resulted from an increase in harvesting, as real stump prices showed a decline. The inflation rate calculated using the wholesale price index was high at 4.9%.
  • In real terms, stumpage earnings increased by 11% compared with the ten-year average. Private non-industrial forest owners’ earnings were 14% above the average, but those of the forest industry and state were 1,5% below the average.
  • Spruce log was the most important wood assortment and spruce the most important tree species concerning earnings. Spruce logs made up 38% of total earnings. In particular, spruce is important in Southern Finland and in private non-industrial forests. In Ostrobothnia and Northern Finland, as well as mainly in forests owned by the forest industry and the state in Eastern and Northern Finland, pine was clearly the most important tree species. Logs covered 69% of total earnings: 70% in private non-industrial forests and 62% in forests owned by the forest industry and the state.
  • Assortment-specific information regarding Åland Islands is not published for reasons of data privacy. Information about gross stumpage earnings for the whole of Finland is available from databases of owner-specific gross and net stumpage earnings.
  • The sum of invested net stumpage earnings (gross stumpage earnings - investments in wood production) is based on an estimate. Final figures will be published in September.
