Total roundwood removals and drain by region, 2015

Published 1.7.2016
  • Roundwood removals, or the total volume of roundwood harvested from the Finnish forests, in 2015 amounted to 68 million cubic metres. The volume is 2.7 million cubic metres (4%) higher than last year, and higher than ever before in the history of the statistics.
  • Of the total volume, 58.8 million cubic metres (86%) consisted of logs and pulpwood harvested for export or the raw material of Finnish industries. The rest, 9.2 million cubic metres, consisted of energywood, i.e. roundwood to be used as fuelwood in residential housing or as wood chips in heat and power plants.
  • According to Luke data, the forest land for wood production has about 2,100 million cubic metres of roundwood. Currently, of that volume, 81 million cubic metres of industrial and energywood can be harvested in a sustainable way. The total roundwood removals in 2015 in Finland were a little over four fifths of the harvestable volume.
  • In addition, roundwood drain increased in 2015 to a new record, 82 million cubic metres. This volume consists of the roundwood removals plus logging residue left in the forest plus naturally dead trees.

As of 2015, areal data are published separately for each regional administrative unit and price region of Finland. However, due to data confidentiality, owner group specific data are presented only by price regions or their larger combinations.
