Utilised Agricultural Area 2016

  • The area for grains, 1,109,000 hectares, still covers about half of the total arable land, but is 29,300 hectares lower (-3%)
  • The sown area of oats, 331,500 hectares (+8%) is growing as that of other grains shrinks; area of barley 485,800 ha, (-5%), wheat 222,600 ha (-10%) and rye 26,500 hectares (-16%)
  • The area of caraway is increasing to around 20,500 hectares (22%)
  • The area of broad bean is increasing to 16,500 hectares (23%)
  • The area of oilseed rape (31,300 ha, +60%) has exceeded that of turnip rape (30,800 ha, +18%) for the first time
  • The area of feed grasses, 687,600 hectares, was last this high in 1996. The area grew by  35,200 hectares (+5%)
  • In 2016, the utilized agricultural area was 2,274,500 hectares e.g. slightly higher than in 2015 (+1,200 ha). Area composes of 49,480 agricultural and horticultural enterprises in Finland.
