Wood pellets 2016

  • In 2016, a total of 271,000 tonnes of wood pellets were produced, ten per cent less than in the previous year. Production volume was highest in 2008 at 373,000 tonnes.
  • Exports of wood pellets – 34,000 tonnes – were reduced by more than 40 per cent compared to the previous year, to the lowest figure recorded thus far. Imports of wood pellets were also reduced by a total of 16 per cent year-on-year and amounted to 50,000 tonnes. The apparent consumption (production+imports-exports) of wood pellets in Finland  amounted to 286,000 tonnes in 2016.
  • Deliveries by pellet producers based on domestic pellet production grew by 26 per cent compared to the previous year, amounting to 302,000 tonnes, which is the highest ever volume. The amount of wood pellets delivered to power and heating plants increased by a third amounting to 244,000 tonnes. The amount of wood pellets delivered to households and farms has levelled off at around 58,000 tonnes over the last few years.
