Commercial inland fishery 2018

  • The commercial inland fishery catch totalled 5.2 million kilos in 2018. In 2017, the total catch was 6.5 million kilos.
  • The crayfish catch totalled approximately 594,000 crayfish, with the signal crayfish accounting for roughly 97%. The crayfish catch decreased by nearly 30% compared with 2017. Particularly the noble crayfish catch experienced a major decrease.
  • The value of the total catch amounted to EUR 14.7 million in 2018, which is slightly less than during the previous year.
  • Vendace was the most important inland fish species measured by both catch volume (nearly 50% of the total catch) and value (41% of the total catch value). The commercial vendace catch has been stable throughout the 2000s, and the value of the vendace catch, EUR 5.8 million, remained around the same as in the previous years.
  • Measured by the catch value, pikeperch (EUR 4.8 million) was the second most important inland fish species following vendace. Combined, these two species accounted for three quarters of the total value of the commercial inland fishery catch.
  • European whitefish was the third most valuable inland species (EUR 0.84 million). The value of the European whitefish catch has increased in recent years. In the last two years, the value of the signal crayfish catch has been higher than the value of the European whitefish catch.
  • The catch of removal fishing remained around the same as in the previous years and was 0.6 million kilos.
  • There were about 1,800 registered commercial inland fishermen in Finland in 2018.
