Commercial marine fishery 2018 (provisional)

In 2018, the marine catch by fishing vessels registered in Finland totalled 147 million kg.
The bulk of catch consisted Baltic herring (126 million kg), followed by sprat (16 million kg).
The catch of Baltic herring decreased 8 million kg, sprat remained at the same level as last year.
The majority of the fishermen fished perch, whitefish, pikeperch, salmon and pike with gill nets or trap nets in the coastal areas. The catches of European whitefish were exceptionally low while the decrease the of the perch and pikeperch landings ceased.
All commercial marine fishing operators have an obligation to report their catch data. Depending on the size of the fishing vessel and the catch species, reports are filed either for each catch of fish, or on a monthly basis.
