Fish consumption 2018

  • In 2018, Finnish people consumed little less than four kilos of domestic fish and a little more than nine kilos of imported fish per person. The consumption of domestic fish has been converted into fillets, apart from vendace, while the consumption of imported fish has primarily been calculated on the basis of the product weight. The consumption of vendace has been calculated as the weight of gutted fish.
  • The most important domestic species in terms of consumption was farmed rainbow trout (1.2 kilos per person), while of imported fish, farmed salmon was consumed the most (3.5 kilos per person). The consumption of imported salmon decreased by 13% from the previous year.
  • Of wild-caught domestic fish, vendace was consumed the most (0.46 kilos per person). It was followed by pike (0.44 kilos), perch (0.40 kilos), pikeperch (0.34 kilos), Baltic herring (0.31 kilos) and European whitefish (0.23 kilos).
  • With regard to the consumption of imported fish products, farmed Norwegian salmon was followed by canned tuna and other tuna products, farmed rainbow trout, frozen pollock, and shrimps and shrimp products.
