Published 16.11.2020
  • Finnish enterprises processed 76 million kilos of fish in 2019. This amount is three million kilos less than in 2017 when the previous statistics of fish processing products were compiled.
  • Of all fish used as raw material for processed products, 45 million kilos were of a domestic origin and 31 million kilos were imported. The proportion of domestic fish decreased six million kilos, while that of imported fish increased by four million kilos compared to 2017.
  • The reason for change between domestic and imported fish was that rainbow trout produced by Finnish enterprises in Sweden was calculated domestic unlike earlier.
  • The amount of full frozen Baltic herrings and sprats for exports increased by three million kilos from 20 to 23 million kilos.
  • The processing volume of salmon imported from Norway decreased by over two million kilos to over 22 million kilos.
  • A total of 15 million kilos of domestic fish and 22 million kilos of imported fish were processed into fillets and other fresh products. Moreover, 14 million kilos of fish, 40% of which was domestic fish, were used for highly processed products.
  • The Baltic herring was followed by the salmon, rainbow trout and whitefish in the processing industry. These four species accounted for 95% of all fish-based raw material.
  • There were 124 fish processing enterprises, of which 19 processed more than half a million kilos. These accounted for 94% of the total volume of processed fish.
