Foreign trade in agri-food products, 2018

  • The value of imported agri-food products was EUR 5.3 billion in 2018, while the value of exports remained at EUR 1.5 billion. The corresponding figures in the previous year were EUR 5.2 and 1.6 billion respectively.
  • In 2018, products groups with the highest export value were milk and dairy products (23% of the total value of exported agri-food products), other processed food products (21%), and alcohol, beverages, sugar confectionery and tobacco (20%).
  • The most significant product groups imported were other processed food products (24% of the total value of imported agri-food products), alcohol, beverages, sugar confectionery and tobacco (21%), and fruit, berries and vegetables (14%).
  • Other EU states account for roughly 70% of exports of agri-food products and approximately 75% of their imports. Other European countries cover roughly 10% of the value of both imports and exports.
  • In 2018, the most important export countries were Sweden, Estonia, France and Russia, whereas the Netherlands, Germany, Sweden and Norway were the most significant import countries.  In 2014, Russia was still the most important export country for Finnish agri-food products.  The value of exports to China increased by approximately 50% from 2017.
