Foreign trade in fish 2018

  • In 2018, the amount of fish and fish products exported from Finland was 85 million kilos. The volume of exported fish increased by eight and half million kilos from the year before. The value of exports, EUR 181 million, increased by as much as EUR 33 million. The value of exports of fresh whole salmon, imported from Norway and exported to other European countries, increased from EUR 95 million to EUR 137 million.
  • The amount of fish exported for human consumption amounted to nearly 65 million kilos, and that of products to be used for other purposes to 20 million kilos.
  • The key export countries for fish and fish products were France (EUR 33 million), the UK (EUR 28 million), Lithuania (EUR 22 million), Estonia (EUR 21 million), Poland (EUR 18 million), Denmark (EUR 14 million) and Spain (EUR 12 million). 44% of all fresh whole salmon was exported to France and the UK.
  • Finland’s most important export products included fresh salmon and rainbow trout, fresh and frozen Baltic herring and sprat, and fish roe and roe products.
  • In 2018, about 117 million kilos of fish and fish products were imported to Finland. Compared to the year before, the import volume decreased by one million kilos. Total value of imports increased by EUR 11 million to EUR 522 million.
  • The amount of fish imported for human consumption was 95 million kilos. The volume of products classified as food was half million kilos and their value EUR 11 million greater than that of the previous year.
  • The most important import countries for fish and fish products included Norway (EUR 315 million), Sweden (EUR 68 million), Denmark (EUR 27 million) and Estonia (EUR 22 million).
  • Of the total import volume, 59% (69 million kilos) originated in Norway. The main item imported for human consumption from Norway were whole fresh sea salmon (47 million kilos), of which 23 million kilos was exported directly. In addition, products such as shrimp and prawn, and herring preserves and ‑preparations were imported.
  • The volume of fish and fish products imported from Sweden totalled 14 million kilos and from Estonia 9 million kilos and Denmark 6 million kilos.
