Foreign trade in fish 2020 (provisional)

  • Finland exported 83 million kilos of fish and fish products in 2020. The volume of exports decreased by 4.6 million kilos from the previous year. The value of exports, EUR 178 million, increased by EUR 14 million. The value of further exports of fresh whole salmon imported from Norway to the rest of Europe decreased by EUR 2 million from EUR 117 million to EUR 115 million.
  • The volume of products exported for human consumption was 72 million kilograms, and 10 million kilograms were exported for non-human consumption.
  • The main exporting countries for fish and fish products were France (EUR 33 million, Estonia (EUR 25 million), Belarus (EUR 18 million), Lithuania (EUR 14 million), Poland (EUR 14 million), the United Kingdom (EUR 14 million) and Spain (EUR 12 million), with 27% of fresh whole salmon exports going to France, followed by Lithuania, Poland, the United Kingdom and Spain with a combined share of 49%.
  • The most important export products from Finland were fresh salmon and rainbow trout, both filleted and whole, frozen herring and roe and roe products.
  • 97 million kilos of fish and fish products were imported to Finland in 2020. Compared to the previous year, the volume of imports decreased by 3.4 million kilos. The value of imports, EUR 453 million, decreased by about EUR 35 million. In particular, the value of imports of fresh rainbow trout has fallen year on year. The main imports in terms of value were fresh salmon, canned tuna and fresh salmon and trout fillets.
  • The amount of fish products imported for human consumption was 90 million kilos, which was 1.5 million kilos more but worth 33 million euros less than in the previous year.
  • The main importing countries for fish and fish products were Norway (EUR 293 million), Sweden (EUR 34 million) and Denmark (EUR 20 million). The value of rainbow trout imports from Sweden has plummeted in recent years; by almost EUR 16 million from the previous year.
  • Almost 62% (61 million kilos) of the total volume of imports came from Norway. Most fresh sea salmon (45 million kilos) was imported for human consumption, of which 23 million kilos were exported as such. In addition, shrimp as well as herring products and preserves were imported.
  • Seven million kilograms of fish and fish products were imported from Sweden, 5 million kilograms from Denmark and 4 million kilograms from Estonia.
