  • In 2020, the forest industries’ roundwood consumption totalled 67.0 million cubic metres, 6% less than in the previous year. The consumption was at its highest in 2006, when it amounted to 75.5 million cubic metres.
  • The consumption of domestic roundwood decreased by 7% from the previous year to 57.3 million cubic metres. This decrease covered all assortments. The consumption of imported roundwood was at the previous year’s level at 9.7 million cubic metres.
  • The most important roundwood assortments used by the forest industries were pine pulpwood (16.7 million cubic metres), hardwood pulpwood (13.4 million cubic metres) and spruce logs (13.0 million cubic metres). The total consumption of logs was 24.7 million cubic metres (–6% from the previous year), and that of pulpwood was 39.6 million cubic metres (-7%).
  • The consumption of roundwood decreased from 2019 in all the most significant branches. Nearly half of all roundwood, 32.5 million cubic metres (–8% from the previous year), was processed by the chemical pulp industry. The production of sawmill industry products consumed 24.7 million cubic metres of roundwood (–3%). The relative share of the sawmilling industry from the total consumption of roundwood increased by 1%.
  • One fifth of roundwood, or 13.5 million cubic metres, was consumed in the region of South Karelia. It was followed by the regions of Kymenlaakso and Central Finland, at 7.4 million cubic metres each.
