Profitability of fishery 2017

  • In 2017, a total of 1,643 companies operated in the fishery industry.  Of these, 71% were fishing companies, with and most of them being are engaged in small-scale fishing  
  • The fishery industry provided 2,498 person-years of employment. Fish processing provided the most employment: 30% of the entire industry. Fishing accounted for 11%, aquaculture for 14% and fish trade for 45%. The amount of person-years increased the most in fish wholesale
  • In 2017, the total revenues of fishery industry companies were EUR 959 million. Fish processing produced the highest revenues at EUR 354 million. It was followed by fish wholesale with total revenues of EUR 329 million. Fish retail trade produced total revenues of EUR 153 million, aquaculture EUR 86 million and commercial marine fishing EUR 37 million
  • The added value produced by the fishery industry was EUR 155 million, most of which (EUR 49 million) came from fish processing. Wholesale produced the second largest added value at EUR 36 million
  • Fish processing was the most profitable sector in the fishery industry with net result of EUR 8.8 million. Fishing produced net result of EUR 5.4 million, and the net result of aquaculture companies was EUR 8.3 million. Wholesale produced net result of EUR 4.1 million and retail of EUR 6.3 million
