Profitability of fishery 2018

  • A total of 1,506 companies operated in the fishery industry in 2018. Of these, 71% were fishing companies, most of them practising small-scale fishing. 
  • The fishery industry provided 2,406 person-years of employment. Fish processing provided the most employment: 34% of the jobs in the entire industry. Fishing accounted for 10%, aquaculture for 13% and wholesale and retail trade for 43% of the employment in the industry. The number of person-years increased in fish processing and wholesale but decreased in primary production and fish retail trade.
  • In 2018, total income of fishery industry companies amounted to EUR 964 million. Fish processing produced the highest income at EUR 397 million, followed by wholesale with total income of EUR 330 million. Fish retail trade produced total income of EUR 117 million, aquaculture EUR 81 million and fishing EUR 38 million.
  • The added value produced by the fishery industry amounted to EUR 166 million, most of which (EUR 56 million) came from fish processing. Wholesale produced the second largest added value at EUR 37 million.
  • With its net results of EUR 13.3 million, fish processing was the most profitable sector in the fishery industry. Fishing produced a net result of EUR 9.4 million, fish retail EUR 6.4 million and wholesale EUR 5.3 million. The net result of aquaculture companies was EUR 4.7 million.
