Recreational fishing 2018

Published 4.11.2019
  • In Finland, the number of recreational fishermen totaled 1.5 million in 2018. In 2016 the number stood at approximately the same level. Of the Finnish population, more than one in four –  27% – is engaged in recreational fishing. Of Finnish males, approximately 37% are recreational fishermen, while 18% of females go fishing.
  • The catch made by recreational fishermen decreased from nearly 30 million kilos to over 22 million kilos compared with 2016. The proportion of pikeperch catch was 15% and the proportion of perch and pike catch together over half of the total catch
  • Net fishing accounted for over 30% of the catch, while in 2000, net anglers caught one half of the total catch. Fish caught using a spinning rod or by trolling accounted for nearly 38% of the total catch.
  • The information is based on a survey with a sampling of 7,500 people living in the various parts of Finland, whose names were obtained from the Population Register. A survey form was posted to them in early 2019. In addition, a sample of those who failed to respond to this survey was interviewed by phone.
  • Disclosure of statistics 3.2.2022 has been moved due to challenges in the production process. The new release date will be announced later.
