Structure of agricultural and horticultural enterprises 2018

  • There were a total of 47,633 agricultural and horticultural enterprises in Finland in 2018. The number of farms dropped by approximately 900 on the year 2017.
  • The average utilised agricultural area of the farms was 48 hectares.
  • The average age of farmers was 53 years.
  • Some 86 per cent of all farms were family-run, nine per cent were farming syndicates, while farms owned by heirs and limited liability farms represented two per cent each.
  • Approximately 8 per cent of all farmers on privately owned farms are under the age of 35, and 29 per cent are over the age of 60.
  • Nearly 70 % of farms have plant production as their primary production line, and 27 per cent of farms are classified as livestock farms. The rest of Finnish farms are mixed farms with no clear primary production line.
