Wood pellets 2018

  • In 2018, a total of 385,000 tonnes of wood pellets were produced in Finland, being 19 per cent more than in the previous year and the highest in history. The second highest production volume of 373,000 tonnes was recorded in 2008.
  • The imports and exports of wood pellets also increased. More wood pellets were imported than ever before, totalling 95,000 tonnes, being 9 per cent more than in the year before. Most pellets, more than 90 per cent, were imported from Russia.
  • The exports of wood pellets increased by 16 per cent from the previous year to 43,000 tonnes. More than 80 per cent of exports were directed at Denmark. The highest export volume was recorded in 2008 when the 227,000 tonnes of wood pellets were exported, i.e. five times the volume exported in 2018. The apparent consumption (production + imports - exports) of wood pellets in Finland amounted to 436,000 tonnes.
  • Deliveries by pellet producers based on domestic pellet production decreased by 5 per cent from the previous year to 332,000 tonnes. The amount of wood pellets delivered to power and heating plants and large buildings decreased to 270,000 tonnes. The amount of wood pellets delivered to small-scale housing and farms remained unchanged at 62,000 tonnes.
